Data released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications revealed that the nation's core consumer price index (CPI) climbed 1.7% in August compared to the same period last year, falling short of the median forecast of a 1.8% increase.
This projection was based on a poll of 27 economists, whose estimates ranged from a 1.7% to 2.0% rise. The core CPI metric excludes volatile fresh food prices, offering a clearer view of underlying inflationary trends.
Meanwhile, the overall CPI, which includes all items, rose 1.9% year-on-year in August, also slightly below the anticipated 2.0% increase. When stripping out both energy and fresh food costs, the index advanced 1.9% against the prior year, compared to the 2.0% gain that had been forecast by analysts.
