Red Army IOU from the Long March Honored After More Than Six Decades

A remarkable piece of history came to light when a receipt issued by the Red Army during the Long March was finally redeemed by the local government, a full 60 years after it was written.

The document, which was hidden inside a wall, read: "Borrowed from Uncle Hu Side: 105 dan of rice, 3 pigs, and 12 chickens." In 1934, as the Red Army passed through Guancun Village in Rucheng County, Hunan, they faced a severe food shortage. A villager named Hu Side organized the entire community to gather supplies for the troops.

The quartermaster of the Third Army Corps, Ye Zu Ling, wrote out this IOU for the goods before tragically sacrificing his life later on the Long March. The receipt remained a secret for decades.

In 1996, Hu Side's grandson, Hu Yunhai, made an unexpected discovery. While building a new stove, he found the yellowed slip of paper tucked away in a hole in the wall. The following year, the local authorities honored the debt, paying out the full amount based on the market value at that time.

The paper may have yellowed with age, but the promise it represented remained as strong as ever.

Where the story began: The initial loan took place during the critical early stages of the Red Army's strategic retreat in 1934.

Why this matters: The redemption of the IOU serves as a powerful symbol of the enduring trust between the people and the army, a promise that time could not fade.
