Bitcoin Holds $75K Post-Rate Decision: Unpacking the Break From Stock Market Moves

The Federal Reserve's latest rate increase did not trigger the market turmoil some had anticipated, with Bitcoin stabilizing near the $75,000 threshold while US equities experienced a noticeable pullback.

This divergence is rooted in the market having already priced in the rate hike ahead of the announcement, with a significant portion of the bearish factors absorbed through price adjustments in the lead-up to the meeting. Consequently, the actual market impact following the policy decision proved far less severe than the dramatic swings investors had initially feared.

Monetary policy adjustments were made by the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) with unanimous support from all 12 members, raising the federal funds rate target range by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4%. This marks the first rate increase since 2023, signaling a definitive shift back toward a tightening stance after an extended period of easing or pause.

While the quarter-point move aligned with mainstream forecasts, the decision itself underscored the Fed's heightened focus on inflationary pressures within the current economic environment. It is important to note that this resolution was not an isolated action but rather a calculated response to comprehensive macroeconomic data, designed to curb overheating price levels by elevating the cost of borrowing.

Market participants had assigned an extremely high probability to this rate move before the meeting, which meant the outcome, when it arrived, did not spark widespread panic selling. Instead, investors redirected their attention to the Fed's forward guidance and the likely trajectory of future policy.

In his post-meeting remarks, Fed Chair Jerome Powell sent a clear signal that inflation remains the most pressing issue at hand. He noted that the US economy has strengthened further since the June meeting and that the labor market remains broadly stable, yet the pace of price cooling has not matched the levels policymakers expected. Powell cautioned against easing vigilance on inflation prematurely, stressing that with inflation still above the 2% long-term target, monetary policy must maintain a sufficiently restrictive posture.

A more critical variable lies in the updated rate projections. According to data compiled by Woofun AI, the latest dot plot shows the median federal funds rate forecast for the end of 2026 has been revised upward from 3.8% in June to 4.1%. Additionally, the Fed now projects PCE inflation at 3.7% and core PCE inflation at 3.4% for 2026, both significantly above the 2% objective. This suggests that the high-rate environment may persist longer than previously expected, with the possibility of further hikes remaining on the table. Powell emphasized that future policy will be strictly data-dependent, with no pre-commitment to specific next steps.

Bitcoin's ability to remain resilient in this landscape stems from a structural weakening of its correlation with traditional assets. Data indicates that Bitcoin's correlation with the US dollar, the S&P 500, and the Nasdaq has declined, while regulatory policies, crypto market capital flows, and sector-specific events now carry greater weight in influencing short-term price movements.

Earlier, setbacks in the progress of the clear legislation contributed to increased long liquidations in the derivatives market, allowing some of the negative sentiment to be reflected in prices before the meeting. This helped contain selling pressure after the rate decision was announced. However, this does not imply that the Fed's influence has diminished. High rates continue to elevate funding costs, and rising Treasury yields increase the opportunity cost of holding dollar-denominated assets.

Bitcoin's current price action merely indicates that near-term selling pressure remains manageable. What will ultimately determine the next phase of market direction is still the evolution of global liquidity and shifts in overall market risk appetite.
