According to provisional results from a statistical survey released by the Census and Statistics Department today, Hong Kong's overall manufacturing production index rose 2.3% in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier, following a 3.1% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2026.
The corresponding producer price index rose 13.1% in the second quarter of 2026 versus the same quarter a year ago, after climbing 17.7% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026.
For sewage treatment, waste management and pollution remediation activities, the industrial production index rose 1.0% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, compared with a 1.4% year-on-year decline recorded in the first quarter. The corresponding producer price index increased 2.2% year-on-year in the second quarter, following a 3.9% gain in the first quarter of 2026.
The industrial production index reflects changes in the volume of local industrial output, excluding the effects of price movements. These price changes are measured by the producer price index, which is compiled based on producer price data for selected industrial products and services collected in the same statistical survey.
Industrial production by major manufacturing sectors
Among the major manufacturing sectors in the second quarter of 2026, industries recording year-on-year increases in production volume mainly included the metals, computer, electronic and optical products, machinery and equipment sector (+3.8%), as well as the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media sector (+2.8%).
On the other hand, declines were recorded in the food, beverages and tobacco products sector (-4.0%) and the textiles, wearing apparel and related products sector (-1.5%).
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the industrial production index for the overall manufacturing sector in the second quarter of 2026 rose 0.2% compared with the first quarter of 2026.
Producer price trends by sector
The producer price index reflects changes in local producer prices, measuring the actual prices producers charge for their output (after deducting any discounts or rebates returned to buyers and adding any surcharges), though transportation costs and other miscellaneous expenses are excluded.
In the second quarter of 2026, industries recording year-on-year increases in producer prices mainly included the metals, computer, electronic and optical products, machinery and equipment sector (+24.6%), as well as the food, beverages and tobacco products sector (+0.7%).
Meanwhile, declines were recorded in the textiles and wearing apparel sector (-0.8%) and the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media sector (-0.4%).
