For years, Elon Musk has painted grand visions for SpaceX (stock ticker: SPCX). Now, one of Wall Street's most recognized investors is sketching an equally bold future for the company. Cathie Wood, CEO of ARK Invest, has proposed a scenario where each launch of SpaceX's Starship could generate $1 billion in revenue. Building from that premise, the extrapolated figures are staggering.
According to Investor's Business Daily, Wood cited Musk's goal of achieving 10,000 Starship launches annually by 2030. If each launch holds the potential for $1 billion in revenue, the Starship program alone could produce up to $10 trillion in yearly sales. Musk responded to Wood's post on X (formerly Twitter) with a characteristically brief reply: "Not impossible."
Even so, investors are keen to understand the logic behind such a colossal number. This $10 trillion figure is not an official company forecast. It's an ARK Invest projection, based on Starlink's current revenue per unit of network capacity, combined with the added network capabilities that future Starship missions carrying Starlink V3 satellites could deliver. Wood's own team also anticipates that revenue yield per unit of bandwidth will decline as overall network capacity expands.
Musk, for his part, has previously given a far more conservative revenue target for SpaceX by 2030. Therefore, Wood's calculation doesn't constitute a traditional earnings forecast; instead, it's designed to illustrate ARK's perspective on Starship's commercial potential.
A $1 Billion Commercial Opportunity in Every Starship Launch
Wood's projection starts with the amount of communication bandwidth Starship can place into orbit. In a post on X, she wrote, "Every Starship launch has the potential to generate $1 billion in revenue." She stated that based on Musk's goal of 10,000 launches a year, the Starship business alone could theoretically produce $10 trillion in annual revenue by 2030. Such a scale would fundamentally change how the market evaluates SpaceX's corporate worth.
Wood believes that SpaceX's IPO valuation of approximately $1.75 trillion might, in hindsight, be viewed as a deep value investment opportunity. In response to this projection, Musk offered only three words: "Not impossible." The raw data for Wood's model comes from ARK researcher Sam Korus. According to TipRanks, Korus calculates that current Starlink network capacity generates roughly $19 million in annual revenue per terabit per second (Tbps).
ARK estimates that a single Starship launch could add about 61 Tbps of network bandwidth. At current monetization levels, that would correspond to roughly $1 billion in new communication service revenue. However, a key caveat exists: Korus predicts that as Starlink's total bandwidth expands significantly, the revenue generated per Tbps will decline. For this reason, directly extrapolating current efficiency to thousands of Starship launches is not valid, and the result should not be treated as a standard revenue forecast.
The $10 trillion figure Wood presents is a potential economic scale derived from assuming high launch volumes combined with favorable monetization conditions. It's not an official revenue target set by SpaceX.
Starlink V3 Satellites Are the Core of ARK's Calculation
ARK's model has a basis in current technical reality. According to plans, each Starlink V3 satellite can provide 1 Tbps of downlink bandwidth, and a single Starship launch can carry up to 60 of these satellites into space. The downlink capacity added in one Starship mission is equivalent to the combined bandwidth from ten Falcon 9 rocket launches. These data points also clarify why ARK doesn't view Starship simply as a cheaper, more powerful launch vehicle.
If Starship can inject massive amounts of communication bandwidth into orbit with each launch, it becomes the core engine for expanding Starlink's commercial network. SpaceX is quickly approaching a major real-world test of this concept. Musk confirmed on Tuesday, September 15th, that the company will begin deploying its third-generation Starlink satellite constellation this month. Pending regulatory approval, the 14th test flight of Starship is scheduled for September 22nd. This mission will be Starship's first orbital flight and will also kick off the commercial deployment of V3 satellites.
This test flight could mark a significant turning point for Starship's business model. Some reports suggest the 14th test flight will be Starship's first "revenue-generating flight," used to deliver commercial V3 satellites. Until now, the Starship narrative has largely revolved around engineering development, testing, and the long-term vision of reusable, large-scale space transport. The actual deployment of V3 satellites will bring these technical goals into real commercial scenarios.
Whether it can reach the $10 trillion scale Wood envisions is another matter entirely.
Musk's Own Revenue Forecast for SpaceX Is Considerably Lower
Comparing this to Musk's public statements highlights the impact of the $10 trillion figure. In June, Musk said SpaceX has "a chance to achieve roughly $1 trillion in annual revenue by 2030." That is already an enormous number, but it represents only one-tenth of the revenue Wood projects for the Starship business alone. The difference is crucial: Wood's model applies a Starlink monetization framework to Musk's highly aggressive future launch cadence; it is not official guidance provided by SpaceX to investors.
SpaceX has disclosed full-year 2025 revenue of $18.67 billion. To reach $1 trillion in annual revenue by 2030, sales would need to expand more than 53 times from 2025 levels. Wood's $10 trillion projection, in contrast, would be more than 535 times the company's 2025 revenue. The model also carries another major assumption: achieving 10,000 launches per year would require an average of nearly 27 Starship launches per day.
Achieving that pace would demand a multi-fold improvement in SpaceX's reusable rocket operations, far exceeding current capabilities. Regulatory approvals, launch infrastructure, manufacturing capacity, rocket turnaround times, satellite production, and actual customer demand all represent massive real-world hurdles. Wood's scenario would require every one of a long chain of high-risk assumptions to fall perfectly into place. But Musk's response is telling: he didn't dismiss the $10 trillion figure as fantasy, nor did he reject its possibility outright.
The $10 Trillion Concept Faces Extremely High Practical Barriers
As Investor's Business Daily notes, as long as the $10 trillion isn't directly mistaken for an official earnings forecast, ARK's analysis can offer investors a framework for understanding Starship. The core of this business logic isn't just that SpaceX built a bigger rocket; it's that a massive, reusable Starship could deploy enormous amounts of Starlink bandwidth, enabling a scale of communications infrastructure monetization that's unattainable with current launch systems.
The Starlink V3 satellites are the critical link in this logic: each satellite offers significantly more bandwidth, and a single Starship launch can place far more total bandwidth into orbit than a Falcon 9. The 14th test flight will begin testing this commercial concept. However, a vast gap remains between the first revenue-generating test flight and thousands of launches per year. Similarly, the distance from 2025's actual revenue of $18.67 billion to $1 trillion or even $10 trillion is immense.
ARK's own researcher, James Wang, acknowledges a key constraint in the model: as total network capacity surges, the revenue per Tbps will decline. A straightforward linear extrapolation would produce significant deviations. Expanding Starlink on a massive scale would also require market demand to keep pace to achieve profitability. Wood's projection explains why capital markets assign such a high valuation to Starship: if it achieves rapid reusability and significantly higher launch frequency, the value it brings to SpaceX could far surpass the revenue from launching external customer payloads. It would become the foundational infrastructure supporting an unprecedented rate of Starlink expansion.
For now, the $10 trillion figure remains a hypothetical scenario, not official SpaceX guidance. Musk himself has proposed a potential revenue target of around $1 trillion for 2030. Even when Wood suggested that the Starship business alone could reach ten times that amount, Musk didn't push back, simply stating, "Not impossible."
