Kevin Hassett, the director of the White House National Economic Council, stated in an interview that the private sector is fully equipped to handle the various risks arising from the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. This comes as President Trump has publicly criticized AI industry executives and others who have issued warnings about the potential dangers of this emerging technology.
Speaking on the program "Morning Money," Hassett remarked: "These issues can be resolved, and the private sector is the right venue for tackling them." His comments on Tuesday followed a social media tirade by the President the day before, in which he lashed out at leading AI companies and those cautioning against the technology's risks, insisting that such concerns are a "scam."
The current administration holds a supportive stance toward AI, believing that the United States must maintain its lead over China in this rapidly evolving industry. Hassett indicated that the government has already assumed a role in this arena but should not have its authority expanded further, even as a growing number of corporate executives and lawmakers call for stricter oversight.
"These tough problems can be worked out, and the private sector is the proper entity to handle them," he said. "But that does not mean the government is stepping aside—absolutely not. The government will keep a close watch and utilize enforcement tools when necessary to ensure that businesses operate responsibly."
