Wholesale Price Growth Matches Forecasts in August PPI Report

Official data released on Wednesday revealed that wholesale inflation advanced as expected during August. The Producer Price Index (PPI) climbed 0.4% month-over-month, aligning perfectly with economist projections and accelerating from July's upwardly revised 0.1% gain.

When excluding the volatile categories of food and energy, the core PPI rose 0.2% on a monthly basis. This figure came in slightly below the 0.3% that analysts had anticipated and also trailed the 0.3% increase recorded in the prior month after revision.

The latest PPI release arrives just ahead of the highly anticipated Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, which is scheduled for publication on Friday. Market participants are closely watching the upcoming CPI data for further clues regarding the Federal Reserve's potential policy direction. According to consensus estimates, headline CPI is expected to show a modest monthly gain while remaining unchanged year-over-year at 3.4%. Meanwhile, the closely monitored core CPI is forecast to edge down to 2.4% on an annual basis.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh adopted a notably more hawkish stance than markets had expected during his speech at the Jackson Hole Global Central Bank Symposium last month. This unexpected tone has strengthened speculation that the central bank will implement a 25-basis-point rate hike before the close of the year. Current market pricing indicates approximately a 64% probability that the Fed will raise rates at next week's September policy meeting. Additionally, the market has priced in roughly a 90% likelihood that at least one rate increase will be completed before the December gathering.
