While younger generations are busy streaming AI-generated short dramas and complaining that the eerily similar "twin" characters all look alike, a group of tech-savvy seniors in Shenzhen has quietly surfed to the forefront of the artificial intelligence wave.

Recently, the Shenzhen Senior Citizens Association partnered with a local cultural technology firm to create an original AI-powered live-action short series tailored to silver-haired audiences, titled Old Pals. The show features elderly participants with no prior acting experience, who will star in it using their own digital avatars.

Set in the vibrant backdrop of Shenzhen's urban landscape, the storyline follows a group of 1980s university graduates who reunite after retirement to form a band and chase their long-abandoned musical dreams. This narrative is specifically designed to highlight the city's dramatic evolution and contemporary scenery.

Character concept casting for the series was finalized on September 12, and the production is slated for a full online release by mid-November. This initiative marks a significant shift, propelling the city's older population from the traditional square-dancing troupes to the cutting edge of digital entertainment.

With this project, Shenzhen's senior community is not just aging gracefully, but doing so digitally, proving that creativity and ambition have no expiration date.
