A coordinated operation to destroy counterfeit and substandard products was recently carried out in Zhaoqing City, Guangdong Province, with the local market regulation authority joining forces with multiple agencies. The initiative sends a strong warning against intellectual property infringement and the production and sale of fake goods, helping to uphold fair market competition and protect the legitimate rights of both consumers and businesses.
The items eliminated in this operation covered a broad range of daily-life sectors, including food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, medical devices, household goods, tobacco and alcohol, gas appliances, and electronic scales. In total, over 220,000 pieces weighing more than 40 tonnes were destroyed, with an estimated value exceeding 800,000 yuan. The entire process applied environmentally sound methods such as crushing and shredding, ensuring these illicit products could not re-enter the market.
In recent years, the market supervision department in Zhaoqing has consistently upheld the principle of regulation serving the people. Following national and provincial guidelines on consumer protection and the improvement of the consumption environment, the department has run special enforcement campaigns, including the "Iron Fist" operation targeting violations in livelihood sectors and dedicated IP enforcement. The focus has been on cracking down on the production and sale of fake and substandard goods, particularly in areas like food, medicine, cosmetics, and gas equipment, which directly impact public safety.
Since 2019, Zhaoqing has organized such centralized destruction events on multiple occasions. These actions amplify the deterrent effect of law enforcement and encourage a society-wide commitment to respecting and safeguarding intellectual property. Moving forward, the city plans to intensify its fight against infringement and counterfeiting, strengthen cross-departmental collaboration, refine the coordination between administrative and criminal proceedings, and improve the precision of regulatory enforcement. These steps are aimed at fostering a safer and more reliable consumption environment, contributing to the city's goals of becoming a strong player in intellectual property protection and quality development.
