Export-linked bids on an FOB Mato Grosso basis were reported around 300 Reais per tonne higher than those posted by the animal nutrition sector.\nChange in balance\nThe widening export opportunity reflects a relatively recent change in the way the Brazilian TCO market is being priced.\nBrazilian technical corn oil is a coproduct of the country’s rapidly expanding corn-ethanol industry, with production concentrated among a relatively small number of mills in the Center-West region.\nFor much of the market’s development, domestic demand — particularly from animal nutrition — provided an important outlet for the oil, while exporters only had to cover the values offered in the local market.\nMarket participants said European renewable-fuel demand is giving Brazilian TCO an increasingly attractive outlet. As export demand has strengthened, suppliers have started to pay greater attention to the value that can be achieved abroad rather than treating exports simply as an alternative destination for surplus material.\nOne market participant described exporters as currently taking a dominant share of Brazilian TCO and having a strong influence over market pricing. Other sources said the economics of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) production in Europe supports higher feedstock values and continued demand for Brazilian TCO.\nThe shift is also becoming visible among smaller suppliers. Sources said smaller producers had not yet consistently reached the levels obtained by the largest suppliers in the export market, but were increasingly exploring export opportunities and testing the market.\nMarket participants expect this narrowing in the range of offers to continue as the market becomes more structured. Differences in quality parameters can affect the value of individual lots, but local suppliers are increasingly adjusting their expectations to the premiums available for TCO that meets the requirements of the European renewable-fuels market, including International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), a sustainability and traceability certification scheme widely used in the biofuels market.\nDomestic market adjusts\nFor domestic buyers, the change is becoming harder to ignore. Animal nutrition remains an important outlet for TCO, but logistics costs can shorten suppliers’ reach, particularly for buyers located away from production centers. Some producers are reportedly only trading in the local market while waiting for ISCC certification needed to access the European market.\nMarket participants said that, previously, exporters could often pay a price comparable with the value available from animal nutrition and still secure supply. As European demand has grown, however, suppliers have become more aware that Brazilian TCO can command a premium in export markets.\n“Today, animal nutrition cannot compete with exports,” one source said.\nExport dynamics are likely to become more important as Brazil’s corn-ethanol industry continues to expand.
