TransAlta has received another order from the U.S. Department of Energy to keep Washington state's last coal-fired power plant operational for an additional 90 days.

The Calgary, Alberta-based power generator said Monday that its subsidiary TransAlta Centralia Generation received the order from federal regulators mandating that Unit 2 of its Centralia Generating Station remain available to support the grid.

The station is now ordered to remain available for operations until Dec. 12.

The power station was earmarked for closure at the end of 2025 as part of a shift toward cleaner sources to generate power but has received three other requests to keep the plant operational. The company had already retired Unit 1 at the end of 2020 as part of a state mandated two-phase closure of the coal-fired plant.

TransAlta said Monday that it will continue to comply with the directive while coordinating with state and federal officials.
