Pickup in Canada Prices Appear Contained, Setting Stage for BOC Hold

0958 ET - Canada inflation data for August is likely to ease the likelihood of a Bank of Canada rate increase next month, says Dominique Lapointe, economist at Manulife Investment Management. Total inflation fell in August from July, and core inflation remained close to 2%. Price pressures appear to have firmed in 3Q, Lapointe says, but "the magnitude of the pickup remains contained and does not suggest meaningful second-round effects from the Iran conflict." Lapointe says he's sticking to his call for no BOC rate hike in 2026, partly because of weaker growth stemming from new U.S. tariffs and elevated trade uncertainty.
