1225 ET - D.A. Davidson analyst Gil Luria accuses leading AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic of engaging in "coordinated cartel behavior" to consolidate their power and hobble competitors following their leaders' calls to slow the development of AI capabilities. The cybersecurity risk of AI improvement "is being exploited by an unholy alliance of Anthropic, OpenAI and degrowth politicians trying to scare citizens and governments into allowing them to seize more power," Luria writes in a note. "Anthropic and OpenAI are trying to pull the ladder and prevent competitors from catching up." Their goal, as Luria sees it, is to implement a regulatory framework on the labs' terms that disproportionately impacts smaller competitors with fewer compliance resources.
