KDDI (TYO:9433), Nippon Telegraph and Telephone's (TYO:9432) NTT Docomo, SoftBank (TYO:9434) and Rakuten Group's (TYO:4755) Rakuten Mobile entered into a memorandum of understanding for a joint study on the use of 5G millimeter-wave infrastructure and technical architectures for wider coverage, according to a Wednesday release.

The study will look into the possible expansion of usage coverage of 5G millimeter-wave base stations among mobile network operators and assess efficient operational frameworks for implementation.

The study will address bottlenecks such as vulnerability of signals to attenuation by physical obstacles and the need for a large number of base stations and related equipment to expand coverage.

Shares of Rakuten Group and SoftBank fell more than 2% and 1%, while those of KDDI rose 1%, in recent trade.
